The confessions of a DJ

Being a DJ, we get the opportunity to play music for a live audience, often using turntables or other electronic equipment.  We work in a variety of settings, including clubs, festivals, weddings, and private events.  This ensures that we always find ourselves in different situations, making our job (although we at Big Boy Events refer to the word job as PASSION) very exciting.

But it isn’t always smooth sailing!  Some of the challenges that we as DJs face from time to time include:

  • Technical difficulties: DJs may encounter issues with their equipment or sound systems that can disrupt their performance.  Luckily at Big Boy Events, our equipment is checked regularly, we set up two hours before the function, and we have backup equipment on hand!

  • Crowd control: DJs may need to deal with rowdy or unruly crowds and try to keep the energy level high without crossing any boundaries.  After 30 years of being in the industry, we can safely say: “We’ve mastered the art!”

  • Long hours: DJs may work long hours, often performing late into the night and on weekends.  Yes, we often survive on Redbull and Bio plus!

Some of the rewards of being a DJ include:

  • Creativity: DJs have the opportunity to be creative and craft unique sets and playlists for our audiences.

  • Connection with the audience: We have the opportunity to connect with our audience through music and create a shared experience, which will be something our connections remember forever!

  • Flexibility: DJs often have the flexibility to choose their own gigs and schedule, allowing us to pursue our passion on our own terms.

  • Travel: We have the opportunity to travel and perform at events in different locations.  We’ve been to all four corners of the country, oh and what a beautiful country South Africa is!

Being a DJ can be a rewarding and exciting career, but it can also be challenging at times. It requires dedication, hard work, and a passion for music.
